How to Study  in Math

Resources for studying:

  • Go back and try the questions again on your quizzes. Find your mistake and learn from them.

  • Redo questions from your notes.

  • Read through the Power Points and do the questions in them.

  • Watch personal tutor videos from the textbook's website.

  • Watch videos on Khan Academy. Type in the topic to the lesson and I'm sure related videos will come up.

  • Do the practice tests in the textbooks - ask me for the answers.

  • Choose questions from the study guides for each lesson. Skip around on the worksheet to get different types of questions without having to do all of them. The ones at the end of each section are the hardest so if they are easy, try to last few in each section to challenge yourself.

Students will be able to...

  • Write equations from sentences and write sentences from equations. (translating from words to symbols)

  • Write equations from word problems

Study Guide & Answers

Lesson: 2.1
Writing
 equations
Lesson: 2.2
Solving one-step equations

Students will be able to...

  • Use inverse operations to solve one step equations

    • addition & subtraction are inverse operations

    • multiplication & division are inverse operations

Study Guide & Answers

Power Point - Review the Lesson

Lesson: 2.3
Solving multi-step equations

Students will be able to...

  • Solve two-step equations

    • Usually we add or subtract first, but students need to know when to not do that first (when it's written like a fraction)

Study Guide & Answers

Lesson: 2.4
Solving equations with variables on both sides

Students will be able to...

  • Solve equations with variables on both sides of the equals sign.

    • Add/subtract the variable terms all to one side, and the constants all to the other first, then multiply/divide to get the variable by iteself.

Study Guide & Answers

Lesson: 2.5
Solving equations involving absolute value

IXL Practice

Students will be able to...

Students will be able to...

  • Reduce fractions to tell if they are equivalent ratios

  • Multiply fractions to see if they are equivalent ratios

  • Turn fractions into decimals so they can be compared

  • Cross multiply to solve for x

  • Set up proportions for word problems to find the missing value.

Lesson: 2.7
Percent of Change

Students will be able to...

  • Find the percent of change between two numbers

    • (Change/original) = (x/100)

  • Find the original amount of something when given the percent of change and the new amount

  • Find the percent of something

  • Find the discounted price (subtracting a percent)

  • Find the price with tax (adding a percent)

Power Point - Review the Chapter

Lesson: 2.8
Literal equations and dimensional analysis

Power Point - Review the Chapter

Students will be able to...

  • Rearrange equations that only have variables.

    • Changing the format of the equation is helpful when you want a different variable as your output value.

Studying for the Chapter 2 Test

Do the practice test and check your answers.

Practice any of the IXL's from Chapter 2.

Don't forget, revisit your past homework worksheets and quizzes from this chapter. Maybe things that you didn't know how to do at the time, you might be able to do now!

Classroom Review Activities

Multi-Step Equations Partner Problems

CHAPTER 1 & 2

Work with 1 other person.

One person does the questions on the left, the other person does the questions on the right column of the sheet.

You have different questions, but your answers will be the same for each problem number. If you get the same answers you know you did it right. If you get different answers, analyze each other's work until you both get the same number for the answer.

Activity takes about 20 minutes.

One-Step, Two-Step Equations Worksheet (The one with boxes)

CHAPTER 1 & 2

This worksheet summarizes different types of equations we learned to solve in chapters 1 and 2.

Do this independently, but ask other people for help when you need it.

Be sure to check your answers!

This review takes about 10-20 minutes

Equation Maze

CHAPTER 1 & 2

Solve the equation in the box that says "start"

Look to see if the answer you got is one of the ones branching off that box. If it is, circle that answer and go to the next box it leads you to.

You are finished when you get to the "end" box. Not all boxes will be used.

Check your answers when you are done!

This activity takes about 10-20 minutes.

Stations Maze

CHAPTER 1 & 2

Start at a station, copy down what station number you started at.

Do the question and look for the answer in the choices. The answer tells you what station to go to next.

Repeat this process by doing the questions and going to the stations it tells you to until you are back where you started at. You will go through 10 stations.

Be sure to copy down the station numbers you go to so you can check your answers at the end to see if you did them in the right order.
